Hantengu: The Chains of Fate and the Abyss of the Heart

Hantengu, this contradictory character, struggled between inferiority and violence, lies and truth throughout his life. He was once a criminal who lived his life in his own way, his world was full of twisted reason and indelible guilt. In an accidental turn of fate, Hantengu went from being a sinner who committed countless evil deeds to a demon under Muzan, pushing his already unbearable life into deeper despair.

From Human to Ghost: A Tragic Beginning

The story of Hantengu is a tragedy that cannot escape fate. As early as when he was still a human, he had already carried the unforgivable sin. Cowardly, hypocritical, and incompetent by nature, Hantengu never felt that he had made any mistakes. No matter how tolerant people around him were, he always failed to see his own faults and only blamed others for misunderstanding him. He had a family, a wife, and children, but every time they accused him, his violent instincts would be aroused, and he eventually ended their lives with his own hands.

This vicious cycle eventually led to his arrest and death sentence. However, the night before his execution, Muzan Kibutsuji appeared. The ancestor of demons saw Hantengu’s hidden evil and cowardice and decided to transform him into a demon, making him a loyal subordinate of Muzan and the “Upper String Four”.

Muzan’s choice seemed to give Hantengu a new life, but this new life was not freedom, but an endless cage. Although he had great power as a ghost, he could no longer escape the prison of his own heart.

Hantengu’s ghost image: the duality of fear and manipulation

As the fourth upper rank demon, Hantengu’s normal appearance is terrifying. A wrinkled, pale old face, a tumor on his forehead, and two horns on his head make him stand out. However, his “old age” is not as simple as it seems. Although he is not the strongest among the demons, his uniqueness lies in his ability to split – once beheaded, his body will quickly split into four stronger and younger demons.

Each of these split bodies has its own independent thoughts, abilities, and personalities. Hantengu’s true power is fully manifested in these split bodies. He does not rely on a single power, but achieves the strongest effect through clever splitting and multiple attacks. Whether it is the thunder and lightning of anger, the storm of Coke, or the ultrasonic waves of Sora and the spear of Aijue, the four split bodies work together, making Hantengu’s fighting style extremely complex and unpredictable.

Rage: As the leader of the four splinters, Rage carries a suffocating rage. The staff he wields can release violent lightning and tear apart the enemy. Every swing is an outburst of his inner rage.

Coke: He holds an ancient fan that can summon strong winds to attack the enemy. In the storm, he seems to be an elusive existence, and his offensive is like a tide, advancing layer by layer, making it impossible to avoid.

Kong Xi: Different from other split bodies, Kong Xi excels in aerial combat. His flying speed is almost impossible to catch up with, and the ultrasonic attack emitted from high altitude can rupture the enemy’s eardrums, making people unable to react.

Ai Jue: Ai Jue is the most aggressive one, good at physical skills, holding a cross spear, and attacking quickly and accurately. Whether fighting alone or in a group, he can quickly inflict a fatal blow.

When these fragments merge into one, they form the Hatan, and Hantengu is undoubtedly the most powerful being at this time. Each fragment carries its own independent abilities and emotions, and when the four merge, his power will become almost irresistible.

A mind of violence and cowardice

Although Hantengu’s ghost body has powerful abilities, he is still a person full of inferiority and cowardice deep down in his heart. When he was a human, he regarded his criminal behavior as the arrangement of fate and could never face his own mistakes. He believed that he had never done anything wrong and was just a poor person misunderstood by the world. This mentality made him a hypocritical existence, always evading responsibility and shifting all the blame to others.

His violent instincts did not disappear after becoming a ghost, but were further amplified. When faced with accusations from others, Hantengou would choose to respond with violence, cold and ruthless. His violence was not because he enjoyed the pain, but because he could not face his own vulnerability.

Despite this, Hantengu is not completely heartless. In his interactions with other oni, he can sometimes feel deep down regret and struggle over his actions. However, this regret is always overwhelmed by his cowardice, which prevents him from changing.

The Last Confession: Hantengu’s Self-awareness and Ending

In the final battle, Hantengu’s split body was gradually defeated, and finally exposed his deepest fear and hypocrisy. Tanjiro and Nezuko’s persistence made him realize that he had lost something really important in the process of pursuing power – himself. Although Hantengu’s death gave him a little relief, it also made him completely disappear from this world.

At the moment of death, Hantengu told Muzan one last secret – Nezuko, the girl he once thought was just a tool for others, might be the only ghost who could overcome the sun. This information brought new hope to Muzan, and Hantengu finally completed his last mission in front of Muzan.

His death did not bring light, but was an eternal mystery. His life was full of betrayal, violence and inner struggle, but he was never able to break free from the shackles of fate and eventually died in the darkness he created.
